Thermal Energy Tanks
Engineering, designing, fabricating and constructing thermal energy storage (TES) tanks is one of the strong suits of Matrix Service Company. These thermal energy storage tanks are used in conjunction with chillers to provide air conditioning. The TES tanks allow facilities to use less expensive, off-peak power to chill water that will be stored for use during a period of high air conditioning demand and higher energy cost, thus saving the user money. The unique aspect of TES tanks is both warmer and chilled water are stored in the same tank.
The TES tank works on a closed loop system. When chilled water is required to meet the air conditioning demands, it is pumped from the bottom of the TES tank to the air conditioning unit. The heated water from the air conditioning unit is returned to the top of the tank. Since warmer water is less dense than cold water, it will "float" on top of the cold water.
The secret to keeping the warmer water on top and the cold on the bottom is our patented diffuser system that is used to remove and return warm and cold water to the tank. This diffuser returns the water to the tank at low velocity to avoid mixing the warm and cold water by turbulence. A TES tank is insulated to provide the greatest efficiency for maintaining the temperature differential from warmer to cold.
