Safety Culture & Philosophy
Safety within our company is a “Culture”, a living, breathing, way of life that all levels of the workforce practice routinely and demands Accountability, Communication, and Training.
Over the years, Matrix Service has developed our safety programs around a belief and philosophy based on what we refer to as the “ACT” principle. The concept is very simple. When the three rings overlap, the union represents our safety culture. However, if we fail to “ACT” - fail to follow through with Accountability, Communication and Training - the rings no longer share a unified area and we have a negative impact on our safety culture.
Accountability
We firmly believe that with responsibility comes accountability. To assign our supervisors responsibility for safety without demanding that they also be held accountable for safety, is the one of the greatest mistakes we could ever make.
Accordingly, Matrix Service developed and implemented a
Safety Accountability Program (SAP)
that applies to all levels of management and supervision, throughout the organization.
Communication
Our Corporate Safety Committee (CSC) meets quarterly to discuss safety-related matters and receive a Safety Improvement Plan status update. In addition to representatives from our executive management team, CSC members includes the EH&S Directors from each subsidiary company and one floating field supervisor.
Stop Work Authority
In 2008 Matrix Service developed and implemented a Company-wide “STOP Work Authority” initiative that assigns responsibility and authority to any all employees to Stop Work if they feel a hazard or unsafe exposure to an employee may exist. This authority & responsibility is fully supported by management. Employees are guaranteed that no negative actions related to their employment will occur for exercising SWA.
